Work with us

UPpompey is non-commercial so you can't buy an ad but if you want to write for us, promote an event, send us free tickets or let us know about something important - get in touch.
We can help you reach our audience.

Here are some key elements for a good news story

Relevance: Is this relevant to Portsmouth students? Does it address issues that have an effect on their lives or are of general interest? Is it timely?

Accuracy: Is this based on verified facts and reliable sources? Avoid hearsay and unverified claims.

Balanced Reporting: Give both sides and allow the audience to form their own opinions.

Clarity: Is it clear and easy to understand? Complex topics should be explained in a way that the average reader or viewer can grasp. Avoid jargon or overly technical language that readers won’t understand.

Conciseness: Get to the point (quickly). Avoid unnecessary verbosity or repetition. Choose the short word.

Headline and intro: The headline and the intro (the opening paragraph) should grab the reader's attention and convey the most important information succinctly.

Objectivity: Do you present the facts without injecting your personal opinions or prejudices into the story? (Opinion pieces are good too, just don’t confuse them with news).

Human Interest: Can you find a human angle of a bigger issue to help readers understand it?

Impact: "So what?" – why should we care about your story? Engagement: Get your reader’s attention with anecdotes, quotes or visuals (such as images or videos)

Ethical Considerations: Be careful to protect the privacy of individuals, avoid harm, and ensure fairness.
