Stay bougie on a budget this Valentine’s Day
Students have many pressures – attending lectures, navigating hall life, and contemplating their student loans – so budgeting for Valentine’s Day can be tough. Let us help; we've scanned the supermarket shelves, and compared the price/weight ratios of leading chocolates so you can surprise your loved one with a nutritious and romantic gift – at the best possible price.
This ranks number one for us because with Clubcard prices it works out at just 1.4pence per gram of chocolate, with ten different types of chocolate within. This includes classics such as the hazelnut swirl, truffle heart and perfect praline. It is often regarded as the perfect chocolate box due to its nostalgic connotations of 1970s milk tray man adverts.
This chocolate box is a tasty and well-thought-out selection that looks impressive and romantic without breaking the student bank. With a Clubcard, this luxurious chocolate box comes to £5 (£7 without) making it a deal worth taking. With the price being 1.4p per gram of chocolate, it is certainly worth it. Be warned though, not everyone will appreciate dark chocolate so make sure you get what they will love.
Although being on the slightly pricier side, being £5 (non-Clubcard) for only 199 grams of chocolate this box still ranks highly for its elegance and more sophisticated feel. You can pay the same price as a milk tray but for a more elevated and luxurious romantic gesture. The only downside is dark chocolate and mint are both seen as more controversial chocolate flavours - they are not everyone's favourite. Is it worth the gamble?
This ‘classic collection’ is a standard treat for anyone special on Valentine’s Day. With the eight different varieties of chocolate included, there is sure to be something for everyone in this delight. Furthermore, with it costing the same as the Black Magic Box above, the value is certainly there. However, we thought that the chocolates were not that impressive, and could do with a change.
This is a more niche chocolate some would say and is not your traditional selection. With Clubcard prices, this costs a whopping 2.3pence per gram and without a Clubcard, this is raised to 2.9pence. However, where Thorntons is widely regarded as a more luxurious chocolate brand for the small price of £5 (without a clubcard) you can treat your partner to a full, rich, orangey taste which gives them the lavishness that they so truly deserve.

-Asda £4.50
-Sainsbury’s £6.50
