FOOD: New restaurant Tap + Tandoor, Gunwharf Quays

When I heard about a brand new restaurant opening in January, Tap + Tandoor, I signed up for the pre-release emails to know when it opened.  And when I received that email, on the 26th January, I knew exactly what I had to do that weekend.

Tap + Tandoor is tucked away to the side in Gunwharf, behind The Liquorist and next to the water feature in the middle, meaning it can be easy to miss. It’s a very busy and bustling area with hundreds of people looking for shops, drinks and the best place to eat. I, however, knew exactly where to go.

Walking in, the ambience was warm and vibrant, as it was brand new, it was full of customers having a new experience and enjoying themselves, with great food and great beers on tap. We were seated quickly despite being packed and everyone was helpful and attentive.

Moving quickly onto the drinks, one of the main ideas of Tap + Tandoor is the ever-changing beers on tap every week. Behind the bar is a large copper tank with 10 spouts, each one producing one of the weekly special beers for you to enjoy. The bar is fully stocked with seemingly every brand, flavour and type of alcohol, so anyone will find something they enjoy.

Just like this review, the food came quickly next, which looked beautiful and delicious. The aromas that filled the air when it was brought to us were divine, and we couldn’t wait to get tasting. They have a large menu, consisting of meat and meat-free curries, tandoor plates, sides and starters.

I had the Paneer Makhani, which was creamy, spicy and ever so tasty. Both this and the naan bread were very filling, meaning it is certainly value for money.

Overall, I feel that Tap + Tandoor is a very welcome addition to Portsmouth, with its competitive pricing, excellent food and unique ideas when it comes to the changing beers, I am looking forward to seeing how it grows – and am certainly going back.
