Following Jurgen Klopp’s resignation from Liverpool, who will take on the job?
A few years ago it was clear that Steven Gerrard was a shoo-in for the job, however things are not now looking good following his failure at Aston Villa, and his move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq which, it is safe to say, is not going the best…
1) Xabi Alonso
Xabi Alonso is an undisputed Liverpool legend, and has been widely tipped as the club’s main target to replace Klopp. His incredible Bayer Leverkusen side are sitting at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of title favourites Bayern Munich. However, tactically Alonso employs a wildly different approach to Klopp, playing a five-man defence rather than Klopp’s preferred four.
Surely, he is the perfect fit?
2) Roberto De Zerbi
The Italian has impressed so-called ‘football hipsters’ since arriving as Graham Potter’s replacement last season. Similarly to Xabi Alonso, De Zerbi has used a different system to what Klopp has at Liverpool, favouring a 4-2-3-1 over Klopp’s 4-3-3, with a big emphasis on bringing through young players, something we haven’t really seen under Jurgen Klopp in the past few years, with the exception of Conor Bradley and Curtis Jones this season.
3) A rogue third option?
Whilst this may seem a cop out, clearly the top two choices are De Zerbi and Alonso. Yet there are plenty of other options who the Liverpool board could go for, be it Zinadine Zidane, Xavi or even Julien Nagelsmann, though it is fair to say that all of these options are significantly less likely, but you never know.
Top Klopp quote –
When I left Dortmund, I said it's not important what people think when you come in but what they think when you leave.
