Cascades Christmas: 'The tree's lovely this year’ and the sleigh is 'brilliant'
“Is it too early to celebrate Christmas?” When is it appropriate to put up the decorations you chucked in the attic last year? Today we set out to talk to the people in Portsmouth Cascades to find out what they think.
We ventured out on a wet windy Thursday morning and interviewed some local people at the city centre shopping arcade.
Giant Christmas decorations were already up in Cascades as we approached, even though it’s the start of November. It was the perfect time to answer the question of the month.
We met our first interviewee, Jake Parker, running a stall selling poppies for the upcoming Remembrance Day. The Royal British Legion worker said it was too early, but that: “Yes, the wife’s already put the tree up.”
Whilst he enjoyed the festive tree by his stall, he said it should really only go up on the first of December when the Christmas countdown “truly” begins.
Moving on, we were very lucky to interview a “Christmas Shop” owner, a lady named Keyley McKeowem, who was just taking a break to eat her breakfast.
She took time to speak to us emphasising her “love” for Christmas and commenting on the display area of the shopping centre: “Yes, the sleigh’s brilliant this year.”
Clearly not afraid of the Christmas spirit, Keyley, told us us she “could be listening to Christmas carols in November.” As an expert on the subject, she encourages people to enjoy Christmas as it is an “important time of the year.”
She finished the interview off by wishing us Merry Christmas, which showed us that she is really into the Christmas spirit.
Whilst not everyone was a Christmas enthusiast on the level of Keyley, most agreed it’s a time to be spent with loved ones. When asked if it was too early for Christmas, a family of three who were checking out the décor said: “No, Halloween’s gone!” and “It wouldn’t hurt to put up a few more [decorations].”
People were all very polite and contributed to our research on the topic in the best way possible. Merry pre-Christmas everyone.
TOP TIP: Did you know that if you swap your main lightbulb in your house to the LED lights on the Christmas tree it will cost you 0.2p an hour. That’s only 50p from December 1st to 25th. So many it might be worth putting up your decorations as soon as possible!
Is it too early to put up the Christmas decorations?
Yes, as soon as the clocks go back, mine go up
The 1st of December is a decent date
I'm not a fan of Christmas, it's too commercial now
