To quote Miss Hedge, this show is quite literally a ‘work of art’.

Wow!  That was my reaction when walking out of The Kings Theatre, in Southsea. As an avid theatre fan, the production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has been at the top of my list and truly did not disappoint. The UK Tour version of the show added pzazz to the already ‘record-breaking’ West End Production, with extra glitter, sass and humour from all the cast.

The story of Jamie New, the 16-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a drag queen isn’t all a fairy tale. It was inspired by the incredible journey of Jamie Cambell and his 2011 BBC Documentary which followed his adventure from schoolboy to full-on wigs and heels. As you can imagine what proceeds is a difficult array of challenges- which the show handles excellently.

Kickstarting the crescendo, we are fully immersed into the world of Jamie New with the futuristic stage set-up illuminating the theatre. The lighting by acclaimed lighting designer Lucy Carter was one of the stand-out features of the show, making the whole theatre glow with funky colours. The light-up desks in Jamie’s classroom for the song And You Don’t Even Know It made it feel like a high-end model’s runway.

However, the real stars of the shows were the amazing cast and ensemble. They were energetic, animated and all extremely talented. In particular, it was difficult to take my eyes off Ivano Turcco who is reprising his role as Jamie New for the UK Tour. Portraying the role perfectly, Ivano skillfully balances the character that fans of the show will love while also offering a new and fresh perspective of the character. The actor adds his own unique flair by including riffs to the songs and bringing tones of youthful energy to the character. Not only that but his comedic timing was on point the whole show, making the audience laugh out loud.
