The wing mirrors were left dangling by their wires, and the tyres were slashed
Students with cars are being warned to be vigilant after a first-year student had his car tyres slashed and his wing mirrors smashed.
Harry Dickson, 21, studying Sports Management, went to start his journey home over Reading Week to find his car vandalised on Somers Road, the main road in Somerstown, just to the south of the main university area and a popular place to park. Harry was left stranded, with no means to get back to his family that weekend.
Harry told us he already pays £60 a month to park his car and simply was unable to afford
the necessary expense to make his car roadworthy again. He was quoted the "shock" cost of
£200 for new tyres.
These repairs left him “virtually penniless,” he said, and couldn’t have come at a “worse time", as his rent was due in a week.
He is waiting to be reimbursed by his insurance company, who have yet to confirm if they will cover all the costs.
Harry does not have any information on how or why his car was targeted. Local residents told us that they have seen groups of youths walking around with bats damaging cars late at night. One student said that her sister’s car was damaged while on the drive of her student house.
